MCIWest Thanksgiving Day Safety Message

26 Nov 2014 | Camp Pendleton Public Affairs Marine Corps Base Camp Pendleton

As we prepare to celebrate Thanksgiving, I encourage all Marines to execute good judgment and decision making for your Corps, your friends, and your family.  Just as the holidays are a time for joyous celebration, they are a time for extra caution.  Your safety department has several tips - from cooking to driving - to keep everyone safe this holiday.  I encourage you to tap into that resource and get the word out to your command.

Each of us has both the ability and the responsibility to keep the holiday season from turning to tragedy.  Remind everyone in your command - Marine, Sailor, and civilian, to drive safely.  Check your vehicle to be sure it is road worthy and ready for winter weather if driving outside the Southern California area.  Have a plan to limit driving after dark so that you stay alert.  And of course, don't mix drinking and driving.  I expect leaders to discuss Thanksgiving travel plans with their subordinates.

I know I don't have to ask leaders to reach out to those who will be in the barracks this thanksgiving.  We want every Marine and Sailor to enjoy the holiday, even if duty keeps them away from home this year.

To our MCIWest-MCB CamPen Marines, Sailors and families-Molly and I appreciate your sacrifice, teamwork, and dedication to duty that make this command so unique and special.  America is blessed to have men and women like you standing watch around the world and supporting our expeditionary capability.  I am proud to serve with you, and truly thankful for each of you!  Happy holidays and semper fidelis.
