Camp Pendleton Hosts Trees for Troops

CAMP PENDLETON, Calif.- Camp Pendleton held its annual Trees for Troops event at the Paige Field House here, December 4.

The program, hosted by Camp Pendleton and several civilian organizations, is designed to give fresh Christmas trees to service members free of charge.

“It’s a great way to generate holiday spirit and provide a super benefit for our Marines and their Families,” said Brigadier Gen. Edward Banta, Commanding General of Marine Corps Installations-West, Marine Corps Base Camp Pendleton. “Really, kick-off the holiday season in a great way.”  

For many participants, the addition of a real Christmas tree brings the holidays to life.

“There’s nothing quite like the smell of a fresh Christmas tree and our holiday wouldn’t be the same without it,” said Gunnery Sgt. Scott Coffin, Operations Chief, Operations and Plans Management, MCI-West, Marine Corps Base Camp Pendleton. “It’s heartwarming to see the generosity and dedication of the outside community toward the Marines.”

Camp Pendleton residents began arriving at 5:30 a.m. to the event, which officially began at 8:00. The event also included face painting, music, games, and raffles.

“I think this is a cool set up and a good cause, because we are out here with the Marines,” said Tylor Ezell, one of the civilian volunteers at the Trees for Troops event. “I felt like this would be a good way to help out.”

Wendee Bruner, a four-year volunteer for the program, says that this is the least they can do to show their appreciation for all of the sacrifices that service members and their families make.

“We do this to give back to the troops for all that you guys do for us and to make sure that you have a nice Christmas and holiday,” said Bruner.  

According to their website, Trees for Troops has donated over 157,000 trees to service members and their families throughout the U.S. and overseas since the program began in 2005.
