CAMP PENDLETON, Calif -- Marine Corps Base Camp Pendleton recently discovered an unauthorized discharge from the restroom facilities at the Marine Corps Base, Camp Pendleton 62 Area training pool near Cristianitos Creek, which is currently a dry creek bed, in the northwest portion of the installation.
Camp Pendleton estimates that 807,538-gallons may have discharged from the restroom facilities over a three-year period. This discharge was combined with a similar volume of chlorinated pool water filter backwash. The combined discharge was not visible to Camp Pendleton personnel working at the pool.
There is no health risk to personnel on Camp Pendleton or communities near the base.
An initial inquiry determined that the discharge may have begun during the summer of 2013 when repairs were made on the training pool. The discharge ended on May 31, 2016. Camp Pendleton personnel discovered the discharge during an inspection of a sewer line near the lateral pipe.
Camp Pendleton personnel have not observed any signs that indicate the discharge reached Cristianitos Creek, San Mateo Creek or left Camp Pendleton property.
The inquiry continues into the cause of the discharge.
All appropriate notifications have been made to regulatory agencies.
