Colonel Russell W. Savatt was born in Poway, CA. He attended Platoon Leaders Class Juniors and Seniors, graduating Officer Candidate School in 2000 as the Company E Honor Graduate. Upon graduation from the Virginia Military Institute in 2001, he was commissioned a Second Lieutenant. Following The Basic School, Lieutenant Savatt attended the Communications and Information Systems Officers Course in Quantico, VA, acquiring the PMOS of 0602. Upon completion of MOS training, Lieutenant Savatt was assigned to Marine Wing Communications Squadron 38. He served as the Multi-Channel Radio Platoon Commander and Executive Officer for Company A. During his tour, he deployed to Kuwait and Iraq in support of Operation IRAQI FREEDOM (OIF) I in 2003, OIF II in 2004, and OIF III in 2005. He was promoted to Captain at the end of his tour. In January 2006, Captain Savatt was assigned to 1st Marine Division where he served as the G-6 Operations Officer. Later that year, he deployed to the Middle East as an Individual Augment with Central Command J-6 to be a Network Operations Watch Officer in support of OIF and Operation ENDURING FREEDOM (OEF). In August 2006, Captain Savatt was assigned to 1st Reconnaissance Battalion. During this tour, Captain Savatt was the Battalion S-6, Commanding Officer for Headquarters & Service Company, and Battalion Executive Officer. While assigned to the Battalion, Captain Savatt deployed to Iraq in support of OIF in 2007 and again in 2008. In May 2009, Captain Savatt was assigned to 1st Marine Special Operations Battalion, Marine Corps Forces Special Operations Command. Captain Savatt served as the Battalion S-6a and Battalion S-6. Daniel Rios, a firefighter with the San Diego Federal Fire Department, broke a Marine Corps Base Camp Pendleton record by harvesting the heaviest deer by an archery hunter in base history. With 17 miles of undeveloped coastline, the larget in Southern California, Camp Pendleton has proven to be a prime location for Marines and patrons to hunt.

It looks like oregano and smells like incense; but its effects are detrimental. Commonly referred to as Spice or K-2, synthetic cannabinoid substances consumers use to achieve a high similar to the effects of marijuana, is now illegal as of March 1, 2011 by the Drug Enforcement Administration due to the alarming amount of emergency and poison control incidents related to the negative effects of the substance. With the new temporary scheduling made possible by the DEA classifying Spice as a Schedule I drug, this synthetic marijuana will no longer be available for at least one year. Sentences for first-time, non-violent offenders convicted of trafficking in Schedule I drugs can turn into “de facto” (three strike) life sentences when multiple sales are prosecuted. The Department of Defense recognized the abuse of the easy-to-acquire drug, so the Marine Corps prohibited troops from using the drug and possessing it altogether, Dec. 7, 2009. According to MARFORPAC Order 5355.2, the use of Spice and Salvia directly compromises the safety, welfare, security and good order and discipline within the command, so Marines and other service members should avoid any contact with the substance. Some of the health effects caused by the drug include agitation, anxiety, nausea, vomiting, elevated heart rate and blood pressure, tremor, seizures, hallucinations, paranoia and non-responsiveness.

A ribbon cutting ceremony was held in celebration of the grand opening of a new Deluz Child Development Center, Building 120111, Jan. 24, marking the end of the more-than-two yearlong project. Since there is such a high demand for child care on base, Camp Pendleton put some of the 2009 American Recovery and Reinvestment Act funding to use by building the new facility to benefit base residents. This is one of the 19 rooms for children ages six months to six years to utilize in the new facility.
